Team Profile

The UCF Smart Home, built by Group 4, was a project with the intention to save energy and ease use of household electronics. We took several different approaches before deciding on using passive infrared (PIR) sensors at both the doorways and within the rooms in order to detect occupancy. We demonstrated, through our prototype seen on the top left image, that our system would automatically turn lights on and off as one entered and exited rooms. The system was also able to be controlled remotely through our GUI, seen on the bottom left. With the system connected over a local network, the system can be controlled locally via the wireless link(in most cases a simple router). With the local network connection also connected to the same wireless hub, the system can be accessed from any location via the internet. The different areas the group was able to delve into really allowed all of us to take from the project what we wanted. The project helped all of us gain multitudes of practical experience, from creation and integration of our design researching our project and presenting the case for our project using both our Senior Design I final paper and our Critical Design Review, as well as finding a way to get our system into a format to demonstrate its capabilities to a panel in a classroom setting. This project turned out to be a huge success for the group and something for us to build on in our own time.
