ABOUT

UCF-OMC was a set of mathematics contests for high school students in the Central Florida area. The contest ran for two academic years: 2013-2014 and 2014-5 before the I decided to not continue running the contest. All questions were based solely on pre-calculus mathematics, similar to most high school mathematics contests, such as the AMC. In giving students three weeks to submit solutions to problems, the hope was to provide problems that made students think more deeply than their average homework questions from their school mathematics class.

Each contest had 15 questions in three categories with five questions each: (a) Warm-Ups, (b) Exercises, and (c) Investigations. The Warm-Ups were similar to questions 1 – 10 on the AMC-12, the exercises were similar to questions 11 – 20 on the AMC-12, and the Investigations were be longer type questions that usually require some proofs and stringing together multiple insights. The Warm-Ups were worth 4 points each, the Exercises were worth 6 points each and the Investigations were worth 10 points each, for a total of 100 points per contest. Students were graded primarily on their mathematical communication with partial credit possible for every problem. Actual numeric answers were only be worth a small fraction of the grade, while justifications and proofs for those answers will be worth 60% to 90% of the total grade. The goal of the grading criteria was to promote and reward proper mathematical thinking and communication. The 2013-4 season had 3 contests and the 2014-5 season had 4 contests.
